Can an employer pay the premiums of an individual Health Savings account policy? -

Policy is set up by an employee and they would like the company to pay the premium directly to the insurance company. Saving the company and the individual tax dollars. If allowable, which Insurance companies are allowing the direct company pay? Whatever they do, they have to do the same for ALL EMPLOYEES EQUALLY. I would advise against this - assuming you're the employee. It's NOT IN YOUR BEST INTEREST. If the employer is late making a payment, YOUR POLICY GETS CANCELLED. Never a good idea to let anyone ELSE make your insurance payment, when YOU are the guy who loses out if it's not done. I also can't imagine the employer wants to take on this added responsibility and hassle of something different for each person. Regarding the tax savings. You can't count the savings of a tax dollar twice. If the employee is writing off the expense, then YOU can't. And I think you're talking about two different things here, ONE is a health savings account, the OTHER is a major medical policy. But who knows, you could also be talking about a flexible spending account. Anyway, HSA's and FSA's, you can't use money in there to pay for INSURANCE premium. And if the policy is set up by the employee, the insurer doesn't care WHO pays. And won't give a "grace" period if the payor is late, either. So it's not about "which insurance companies allow the direct company pay". If it's a private policy, they'll take anyone's check. that's not the idea - the savings acct is for the employee to help pay charges not covered by the insurance - you basically save the amount of your tax bracket - the employer doesn't pay your prescription copays at the pharmacy, you do and it's you who gets the tax benefit, not the employer, so why should they put this money into the HSA for you? - it's not allowed - how is the company saving money if they are basically paying your copayments? - This is an employee benefit - it does nothing for the company - they don't don't get to expense any thing and get no tax benefit - it's your money going directly into your HSA and then they reimburse you as you incur uncovered health expenses - your tax able income is reduced. period.
