Can my 22 year-old step -son still be covered by his fathers medical insurance if he is not in school? -
I have a 22 year old step-son who is not in school but thinks that he can still be coverd by his fathers {my husbands} medical insurance, we live in mass. Can you tell me if this is true? That would be a big NO! And if he is still living with you- kick him and and make him grow up! Its possible, but unlikely. The vast majority of employers request documentation of full time student status for children over the age of 19. However, very infrequently, you'll find an employer who will cover a dependent up until X age regardless of full time student status. You should already have the answer to this question, but might not realize where to look. Your health care policy (sometimes called Summary Plan Document or Certificate of Coverage) should very clearly define eligible dependents. It will tell you exactly under what circumstances children can be covered under your policy - up until what age, student or not?, financial dependency and residency requirements, etc. If you can't find your copy of the policy, you should be able to request one either through the insurer or the employer. In our state 19 is the last age you can claim a person not in school. Most likely no. Best bet is to ask your insurance agent. If it would be even remotely possible that he still could be, it would depend on whether or not he lived with you or if he was out on his own. If he is in his own place than again, most likely no. To my knowledge he can not. Only if he is in school full time. When I was on my dad's insurance he could carry me up till the age of 24 if I was in school full time. So your step-son is out of luck. If he has medical needs though there are other sources available. Most insurance companies will consider someone who is 19 or older to be independent of their parrents if they are not going to school full time. So the answer is no, the insurance company will drop your step son from coverage unless you can prove he is enrolled in school full time and there is nothing you or your husband can do about it. Read your insurance manual or call your husband's insurance carrier to absolutely certain. Not unless he is in school full time, I am 22 and I have no insurance which means my teeth are rotting away because I can't afford a dental plan. I believe that is true. If he's out of school, he can't be covered by a parent's insurance anymore. I've had friends that have enrolled in 1 course at a local college, just so they can stay on their parents insurance. nope Sadly one of the greatest countries in the world can't figure a way where many people to get affordable insurance. And insurance prices keep going up. http://www.gocheapinsurance.com/
