What do i need to to do to sell insurance? -
I live in Illinois, and am thinking about switching professions, I am currently a Marketing Manager and was thinking about selling insurance. Does anyone have any advice, do you know what licenses I need and how much they cost? Do I need to takes classes or can I self study and just take a test for a license? Once I get a my licenses whats the next step? Any and all info is appreciated! Go to your state insurance department website, they will tell you what you need to do, depending on what type of insurance you want to sell. Usually the license is less than $100. Usually the testing materials are around $200. Some states require a course, some don't. You can self study for the test, most of the time - I always have. The HARD part, is finding an insurance company willing to let you sell their insurance, when you have no experience. I mean, it's REALLY REALLY HARD. So you're best off, finding a local agency first, who's willing to let you sell for them - they'd keep half your commission, but you'd use their contracts to place business. PLUS, they'll help you fill out applications, and learn how the business runs. Check out this site for your state, it should have the info you need... http://www.idfpr.com/DOI/Default2.asp Hope this helps! The easy part is studying, testing, and getting your license. Cost is really not a factor. Yes, you need classes sponsored by any insurance company. The hard part is actually selling, as you will be told, regardless of which company you go with, to call on your family, friends, and neighbors. Then you will begin losing your family, friends, and neighbors. About 5% out of 100 agents make it their first year, as competition is keen. You will have an advantage only if: 1) you are ruthless and determined 2) you care not about the people you will deal with, only about making the mighty dollar 3) being very forward and outgoing 4) knowing a lot of people from school, church, work, social events, volunteer work, organizations, etc. Or you will succumb like most who try. Depending on the company also, some will teach you to be manipulative, contradictory, and even deceptive. If this is not you, don't do it. Self study and take the state required tests. Depending on what type of license like if you decide to sell securities. I think it is in the hundreds not thousands but I could be wrong since it's been so long ago for me...
