What is the average cost range for an individual long-term disability policy? -

I'm trying to calculate an hourly rate as an independent contractor and I need to get an idea of the cost. I'm 45 and very healthy. It is very costly. In my area (near NYC) and I am close to your age and also do white color consulting, it would run be $240 / month for 70% coverage. I work for a company that provides STD and optional LTD with caps well below my salary. I chose to go with my company LTD plan and change my election to pre tax instead of post tax. If you pay for your LTD premiums post tax then your benefits are not taxable whereas if you pay for your premiums pre-tax then your benefits are taxable. This is a compromise that I needed to make for cost reasons. It mostly depends on your salary, and of course, what KIND of IC you are. ARe you going out on oil rigs, a high hazard kinda thing?? At 45, assuming $4,000 per month benefit, you can plan on the coverage costing you, maybe $2500 a year in a low hazard job. But talk to the guy that writes your business insurance for an accurate quote.
