A way to look up Life Insurance??!!? -

I recently had a death in the family, and we have been unable to locate any life insurance on him. At the funeral someone had told us there is a way to search for it if you have that persons Social Security Number. Does anyone else know anything about this. Thanks! Not exactly true. There IS no central database of active life insurance policies. If you think a policy might have been taken out in the past ten years, then the executor of the estate - and ONLY the executor - can pay a $75 fee to these guys http://www.mib.com/html/lost-life-insura... who can run a report of APPLICATIONS received. Then they'll give you a list, of which companies received applications on that person's life, in the past 10 years, AFTER they get your fee, and the documentation proving you're executor of the estate. Then you have to call every company on the list, to see if they have a policy. BUT, life insurance policies usually get paid once a year, or once a month. It's much easier to just go through their cancelled checks and see what insurance company got paid. If you don't have the cancelled checks, again, the executor of the estate can get them from their bank. That's it! Those are your only options! Most people die without life insurance in place. There is no central data base of life insurance policies. If a policy exists, either the deceased or his next of kin would have the documents.
